Novel Audio SOC From Fortemedia Makes Voice Commands Work on Smart TV

December 19, 2013

FM1488 Audio SoC that Enables Clear Voice Commands from 3 to 5 Meters in Noisy Environments Will be Shown at 2014 CES

Sunnyvale, CA. (December 19th, 2013) - Fortemedia Inc. (www.Fortemedia.com), the world leader in voice processing technologies, announced its first Audio SoC that integrates audio codec with its world-leading voice processing algorithms on-chip that enhances voice commands possible with today's new SmartTV. Voice commands have become popular with most electronics devices in the past few years as it is the most intuitive user interface. However, using voice commands to control TV has proved to be very challenging for several reasons. The various environmental noises cause immense difficulties that earlier technologies were unable to address effectively. Distance is another challenging factor that earlier solutions failed to address and provide adequate quality of a voice signal beyond 3 meters. Key requirements for voice input applications in a SmartTV include the ability to connect to many microphones, typically 4 or more, supporting different microphone placement geometries and the capability to support distant talking ASR in reverberant environments.

Fortemedia's new audio SoC, FM1488, has built-in capability to support voice signal processing for up to 6 microphones, in addition to processing different pickup patterns, providing the best noise suppression capability while extending the consumer's command voice pick range up to 5 meters. The patent-pending solution will also provide multi-channel acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) and suppress room ambient reverberation; all these contribute to significant voice command accuracy improvement. Other features include voice tracking capability to ensure good pickup of user commands when the talker is in front of the viewing area.

"FM1488 is the breakthrough for TV technology," said Dr. Paul Huang, CEO and chairman of Fortemedia, Inc. "We have made a major step in solving one of the toughest problems in the industry."

Fortemedia will demo FM1488 technology with a 4 microphone solution at CES. The product is expected to start sampling in Q2 2014 and MP in Q3, 2014.

Fortemedia Launches Highly Integrated Voice Processor for Automotive Applications

December 18, 2013

FM1388 Voice Processor that Supports Multiple Interfaces and Enables Flexible System Integration with Voice Tracking Capability for In-Car Applications will Showcase at CES 2014

Sunnyvale, CA. (December 18th, 2013) - Today Fortemedia Inc. (www.Fortemedia.com), the world leader in voice processing technologies, announced the availability of the industry's most advanced and highly integrated voice processor, the FM1388, supporting advanced voice processing for automotive applications while supporting ease of system design

As technology interfaces have become increasingly user friendly and more intuitive in nature, voice as an input interface in a car is the natural next step in this evolutionary process. Whether people are navigating the road using navigation systems or responding to an incoming call in a hands free mode, using voice as an input provides a safer and a more enjoyable experience. In addition, this experience can then be further extended to incorporate Voice Recognition applications for future upcoming connected cars. High quality voice communication in a car continues to remain as a challenging problem and is linked to several factors that include the microphone positioning, sensitivity and a variety of transient vehicle noises present such as road bump, wind, rain, wiper noise in addition to semi-constant noises such as AC, heater and fan noise.

Fortemedia's new FM1388 mixed signal voice processor has advanced voice signal enhancement capabilities that are tested and specifically developed and applied towards automotive applications since the audio ambience is quite different from the traditional office or conference room. The processor also incorporates several analog and digital interfaces, making system integration easy for customers, partners and ODM's. This flexibility enables the FM1388 to act as a standalone or a co-processor in a car audio system.

"FM1388 has been developed based on the unique and specific needs of the automotive market," said Dr. Paul Huang, CEO and chairman of Fortemedia, Inc. "Fortemedia has been providing voice solutions for several markets and the 1388 is another testament to our company's innovation for the automotive industry."

Fortemedia will demo FM1388 technology with a 4 microphone solution at CES. The product is expected to start sampling in Q2 2014 and MP in Q3, 2014.

Fortemedia's Voice Processing Solution Delivers for New Metro PCS Coolpad Quattro™ 4G Phone

December 11, 2012

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fortemedia Inc. (www.Fortemedia.com), the world leader in voice processing technology, today announced its new flagship platform, FM36-600, that addresses the market's need for better voice recognition and clear talking, especially for hands-free usage on smartphones. With the expected ability to speak at a greater distance in hands-free mode, which is commonly used in Facetime™ and Skype™ the injected noise has been a challenge for the user. This is the case in any noisy environment, especially for voice recognition. FM36-600 uses two microphones to adaptively track talkers and form a "beam" that effectively removes the noise outside of the specified area. With noise rejected, a clearer voice is much more easily recognized by human and machine, either for voice recognition commands or voice-to-text messages.

FM36-600 consists of a newly developed DSP and a novel voice processing algorithm engine. Packaged in a small 2.3x2.3mm² chip-scaled package (CSP), this very low power DSP supports up to eight microphones that satisfy the need for the latest leading smartphones and other devices that require better voice communication. The leading feature for FM36-600 also includes multi-talking-angle compatibility that relieves the constraints of a traditional fixed talking style. Furthermore, the new platform allows for voice tracking in a multiple speaker scenario. FM36-600 is suitable for other applications such as laptop computers, tablets, smart TVs or "infotainment" systems for automobiles.

"We are very excited about the release of this new flagship product," said Paul Huang, President and CEO of Fortemedia Inc. "FM36-600 solves the challenges of clear hands-free communication, freedom of a phone's holding positions and tracking multiple speakers in noisy situations. In addition, FM36-600 enhances the applicability of voice recognition and can be deployed in a wide range of scenarios."

Fortemedia will demonstrate these advanced features at the coming Consumer Electronics Show, January 8-11, 2013 at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, suite 319. Availability is limited, please contact ces@fortemedia.com to schedule private demo.

The mass production of FM36-600 is expected by end of Q1, 2013 and engineering samples are now available for selected customers.

Compal Electronics and Fortemedia Launch World's First Notebook with Small Array Microphone (SAM) Technology

September 25, 2006

Cupertino, Calif. , September 25, 2006 - Fortemedia, a leader in voice processing technology, and Compal Electronics, a world leader in notebook original design manufacturing (ODM), announced the 1st production ready mainstream notebook integrating Fortemedia's patented Small Array Microphone™(SAM) technology at the Intel Developer Forum 2006 (San Francisco, Taipei, Shanghai).

Fortemedia's SAM module is integrated on the display lid of Compal's HGL30/31 notebook. Differing from broadside array microphone, SAM's unique cone shaped beam can effectively suppress ambient interferers and noises from typing, hard disk or optical drive spinning and notebook fan. SAM also provides uncompromised full duplex speakerphone performance. Its distinctive small form factor, low power consumption addresses the challenges faced in designing notebooks.

The new HGL30/31 series is a thin-and-light notebook with advanced features like 1.3M pixel camera, Fortemedia SAM module, VoIP desk phone integration, TPM 1.2 and fingerprint in a slim 5.3 lb package.

"Compal HGL30/31 series is the 1st notebook targeting popular VoIP applications for traveling professionals and consumers," said Andrew Chen, Vice President of Sales at Compal. "SAM from Fortemedia perfectly fulfills the mobile end user voice communication expectation. The effort we took to design new features into the HGL30/31 is a testament of Compal's goal in delivering the most advanced solutions to the ever changing PC and communications industries."

"Fortemedia's SAM dominates the automotive hands-free communication segment already." said Dr. Paul Huang, Chairman and CEO of Fortemedia. "We are excited to have this opportunity to work with market leaders such as Compal in delivering breakthrough technology such as SAM to notebook PCs. Notebook PC users will now experience superior voice quality for VoIP and video conferencing, more enjoyable internet gaming, and usable voice activated application offered only by SAM. "

Fortemedia's Small Array Microphone (SAM) Technology is Adopted in Mobile Phone for the First Time in the World

September 11, 2006

Cupertino, Calif, September 11, 2006 - Fortemedia today announced that its remarkable technology called SAM (Small Array Microphone) has been adopted for DoCoMo's FOMA™Raku-Raku PHONE III (FOMA F882iES) handset that is manufactured by Fujitsu Limited.

The unique FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III will interest anyone who has ever had to make a phone call in a noisy environment, such as a train station, airport, restaurant or even on the side of the street. Together with Fujitsu and Fortemedia, DoCoMo's FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III aims to solve these annoying problems by applying the patented Small Array Microphone (SAM) technology to create Beamforming, which suppresses undesired noise such as traffic noise, public broadcasts and conversational din by 20 dB. Furthermore, to enhance the intelligibility and the clarity of mobile phone conversations, FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III first uses SAM to measure noise level of the user's environment, and then uses HAKKIRI VOICE (Clear Voice) Technology to improve voice quality for clear voice communication.

"NTT DoCoMo Inc. (DoCoMo) is very pleased to offer such a breakthrough to serve our customers by adopting Fujitsu's HAKKIRI VOICE and Fortemedia's SAM Technology" said DoCoMo. "We will continue to offer better voice communication quality in future product releases."

To call this mobile phone innovation revolutionary may seem like an exaggeration. However against the backdrop of the 900 million plus mobile phones sold annually in the worldwide handset market, the FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III will be the first one to offer Beamforming voice input powered by SAM Technology.

"Fujitsu has been developing technologies to enhance mobile phone voice quality in noisy environments" said Mr. Tatsuo Tomita, corporate vice president, Fujitsu Limited. "We are pleased to work with Fortemedia to enhance the voice communication quality of DoCoMo's FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III to an unprecedented level."

Dr. Paul Huang, Chairman and CEO of Fortemedia, said, "DoCoMo has been leading the mobile communications market by offering innovative products and services for its customers; we are excited by the fruits of working with the Fujitsu engineering team to create this visionary product. This is one of the most significant breakthroughs in microphone architecture and telephony performance history in the last 130 years."

DoCoMo will start to sell FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III for its Japanese 3G FOMA service subscribers in early September 2006.

About FOMA

FOMA, officially short for Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access, is the brand name for the 3G services being offered by Japanese mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo. Around March 2004, with broad coverage including subway stations and the inside of most major buildings, and with the introduction of feature rich handsets, FOMA services were widely adopted in Japan. As of July 2006, FOMA has 27 million subscribers and is the fastest growing cellular phone network in Japan.

About Raku-Raku PHONE

Raku-Raku PHONE is one of the most popular NTT DoCoMo's products for targeting elderly and children who have difficulty to use the various functions in mobile phone. FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III is the newly-developed Raku-Raku PHONE product series, which has been sold more than 770 millions units since this series has launched in 1999. FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III comes equipped with double microphones, which enhance the overall clarity of a conversation in a noisy environment, such as subway stations, streets with heavy traffic condition. Also, this product integrates One-Touch Alarm, which is the function that the handset calls to designated telephone number automatically when user touches One-Touch Alarm button. Furthermore, this model is compatible with i-channel" for news delivered automatically to the phone's standby screen in a large font. DoCoMo will start to sell FOMA Raku-Raku PHONE III in early September in 2006 at open price.
